Tuesday, November 20, 2018 THANKSGIVING TOURNAMENTS UP FOR CONFERENCE TEAMS: As is often the case during the holiday, there will be little in the way of rest for GNAC teams through Thanksiving week. For Western Oregon and Seattle Pacific, weekend tournaments will provide solid Division II teams for programs that had late starts to the season. Western Oregon played its first two games last week, beating Warner Pacific and Colorado Christian at home, while the Falcons swept through last week’s Sodexo Tip-Off Classic after seeing their opening weekend at the Chico State Mac Martin Classic due to the Camp Fire. The Wolves will be in St. George, Utah, where they will face Westminster (Utah) and Dixie State in the Dixie State Thankgiving Classic. The Falcons, meanwhile, will be in San Diego for meetings with St. Cloud State and Cal State San Bernardino in the Point Loma Thanksgiving Classic. Speaking of Thanksgiving Classics, Montana State Billings will host one of its own this weekend as Alaska, Black Hills State and Cal State Dominguez Hills come to town. The Yellowjackets will play Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday and Black Hills State on Saturday while the Nanooks will play the opposite schedule. Northwest Nazarene will test its 3-0 record against Division I teams at the Vandal Hoops Showcase in Boise, Idaho. The Nighthawks will face Idaho on Friday and Portland State on Saturday. Concordia and Saint Martin’s will be in the Bay Area for contests against Holy Names and Notre Dame de Namur, while Alaska Anchorage will host South Dakota Mines for back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday. THIS WEEK'S GNAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK AROUND THE GNAC • Junior forward Michael Kluting finished with 71 points and 23 rebounds in the three games. He had a monster double-double of 33 points and 16 rebounds at Hawaii Hilo, connecting on 11 of 16 from the field and 11 of 14 from the free throw line. Kluting then finished with 15 points and seven rebounds against Lake Superior State and scored 23 points against Northwood. Kluting is fifth in the GNAC with 15.8 points per game and is second with 8.6 rebounds per game. He is eighth in Division II with 50 total rebounds. • Junior guard Jalon McCullough dished out 14 assists in the three games, including five against Lake Superior State and six against Northwood. McCullough leads the Nanooks with 17 assists, averaging 3.5 per game. • Junior guard Aushanti Potts-Woods scored 30 points in the three games, led by his 26 points at Hawaii Hilo on 9 of 19 from the field and 3 of 5 from three-point range. Potts-Woods is averaging 11.2 points per game. • Alaska enters the week averaging 74.2 points and 35.8 rebounds per game. The Nanooks lead Division II with 172 free throw attempts and are second with 115 free throws made. Alaska is also 12th in Division II with 84 total assists. • Alaska plays this weekend at the MSUB Thanksgiving Tournament in Billings, taking on Black Hills State on Friday and Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday. ALASKA ANCHORAGE • Junior guard Tyler Brimhall led the Seawolves with 29 points and 12 rebounds in the contests. Against Northwood, Brimhall led UAA with 23 points and 10 rebounds, shooting 9 of 16 from the field. He then had six points with two rebounds and two steals against Lake Superior State. Brimhall is second in the GNAC with 19.2 points per game and seventh with 7.5 rebounds per game. He is 11th in Division II with 36 field goals made and 12th with 45 total rebounds. • Sophomore guard Brennan Rymer had 27 points in the two games. After finishing with eight points and five rebounds against Northwood, Rymer came off the bench for 19 points and five rebounds on 7 of 12 from the field and 3 of 5 from three-point range against Lake Superior State. Rymer enters the week averaging 8.7 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. • Senior forward Brian Pearson paced the Seawolves’ defense with 15 rebounds in two games, led by his eight boards against Northwood. He enters the week averaging 5.2 rebounds per game. • Alaska Anchorage enters the week averaging 72.5 points and 32.3 rebounds per game. The Seawolves are second in the GNAC and 30th in Division II with 18 assists per game. Alaska Anchorage is also seventh in Division II with 149 three-point field goal attempts and 10th with 56 made. • In the first Thanksgiving break for the Seawolves since the 1970s without the Great Alaska Shootout, the Seawolves will host South Dakota Mines for back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday. CENTRAL WASHINGTON • Senior guard Malik Montoya led the Wildcats with 44 points in the two games, shooting 65.2 percent from the field in the tournament and 77.8 percent from three-point range. Montoya led CWU with 20 points against Azusa Pacific, connecting on 7 of 10 from the field and 4 of 4 from three-point range. He then finished with 24 points on 8 of 13 from the field, 3 of 5 from three-point range and 5 of 6 from the free throw line against Westminster. Montoya is averaging 13.3 points per game and is fourth in the GNAC with a .643 three-point percentage. • Junior guard Gamaun Boykin finished with 28 points and 11 rebounds in the two games. He finished with 15 points and seven rebounds against Azusa Pacific and then added 13 points and four rebounds against Westminster. Boykin, a transfer from Yakima Valley CC, is averaging 14.3 points per game and is tied for third in the GNAC with 8.3 rebounds per game. • Senior guard Jackson Price finished with 16 points against Azusa Pacific, including 8 of 9 from the free throw line, and added 13 points against Westminster. Price is eighth in the GNAC with an .875 free throw percentage, making 14 of 16 this season. • Central Washington leads the GNAC and is 16th in Division II with 90 points per game. The Wildcats are 26th in Division II with 4.5 blocked shots per game and rank second in the GNAC with a .740 free throw percentage. • Central Washington will host a pair of NAIA Cascade Conference rivals over the Thanksgiving week, hosting Evergreen State on Wednesday and Corban on Saturday. CONCORDIA • Sophomore guard/forward Hunter Sweet was named to the all-tournament team after finishing with 33 points in the two games, shooting 68.8 percent from the field. Sweet opened by scoring 15 points with five assists and five rebounds against Cal State LA and then went off for 29 points on 9 of 12 from the field and 10 of 12 from the free throw line against Cal State San Marcos. Sweet is averaging 12 points per game and is shooting 55.6 percent from the field. • Senior guard Jarrett Gray had 40 points and 16 rebounds in the tournament contests. He led the Cavaliers with 23 points against Cal State LA to go along with eight rebounds and two steals. Gray then added 17 points and eight rebounds against Cal State San Marcos. Gray is tied for sixth in the GNAC with 15.3 points per game. • Senior guard Cody Starr had 10 assists in the two games, making five in each game. He enters the week tied for fourth in the GNAC with 4.25 assists per game. • Concordia enters the week averaging 776.8 points per game. The Cavaliers lead the GNAC with 39.2 rebounds per game, is second with a .274 three-point defense and third with a .411 field goal defense. • The Cavaliers travel to the Bay Area for a pair of games this weekend, facing Holy Names on Friday and Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday. MONTANA STATE BILLINGS • Freshman forward Brendan Howard led the Yellowjackets with 38 points in the two games. He led all scorers with 22 points on 10 of 22 from the field against Mary and then added 16 points on 6 of 8 from the field with six rebounds against Minot State. Howard currently ranks eighth in the GNAC with 15 points per game and has started all four games so far in his freshman campaign. • Junior forward Melvin Newbern, Jr., added 24 points and 24 rebounds in the contests. Newbern had a double-double of 17 points and 14 rebounds against Mary, connecting on 8 of 12 from the field, and added seven points and 10 rebounds against Minot State. Newbern is tied for third in the GNAC with 8.3 rebounds per game while averaging 11.8 points per game. • Montana State Billings enters the week averaging 68.8 points and 33.2 rebounds per game. The Yellowjackets are tied for 39th in Division II with 17 total blocks. • Montana State Billings will host its own Thanksgiving Classic this weekend, playing Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday and Black Hills State on Saturday. NORTHWEST NAZARENE • Senior guard Obi Megwa was named the tournament’s most valuable player after finishing with 26 points and shooting 52.9 percent from the field in the two games. Megwa opened with a quiet night of six points, three rebounds and five assists against Cal State San Marcos before pouring in 20 points to go with four rebounds against Cal State LA. Megwa is averaging 12 points per game and is sixth in the GNAC with a .593 field goal percentage. • Junior guard Adonis Arms also earned all-tournament team honors after finishing with 30 points and nine rebounds while shooting 66.7 percent from the field. Arms led all scorers with 19 points on 8 of 10 from the field to go with six rebounds, two assists and three steals against Cal State San Marcos. He then scored 11 points with three rebounds, three steals, three assists and two steals against Cal State LA. Arms is third in the GNAC with 18.3 points and 2.33 steals per game. Arms is also 18th in Division II with a .688 field goal percentage. • Junior guard Jayden Bezzant added 27 points in the contests, paced by his 16 points against Cal State San Marcos on 7 of 14 from the field. Bezzant enters the week averaging 13.3 points per game. • Northwest Nazarene is second in the GNAC in scoring at 85 points per game and fourth with 37.3 rebounds per game. The Nighthawks lead the GNAC and are fifth in Division II with a .551 field goal percentage. Northwest Nazarene is also second in the GNAC and 13th in Division II with a .367 field goal defense. • The Nighthawks will test themselves against a pair of Division I opponents in Boise this weekend, playing against Idaho on Friday and Portland State on Saturday. SAINT MARTIN’S • Senior guard/forward Jordan Kitchen led the Saints in the loss with 12 points on 3 of 7 from the field and 5 of 5 from the free throw line while playing just 15 minutes. He went on to score 13 against Northwest Christian to go with four rebounds. Kitchen enters the week averaging 10 points per game. • Senior guard Rhett Baerlocher has performed well in his return after a redshirt season. He finished with 11 points against UC San Diego and then notched a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds against Northwest Christian. Baerlocher enters the week averaging 12.5 points per game and is seventh in the GNAC with a .581 field goal percentage. • Senior guard Luke Chavez has seen limited action in the first four games of the season, averaging 8.3 points per game in 82 minutes of action. Chavez made his first start of the season against Northwest Christian, finishing with seven points, two rebounds, three assists and three steals. • Saint Martin’s enters the week ranked fourth in the GNAC in scoring at 82.5 points per game and is also averaging 34.2 rebounds per game. The Saints lead the GNAC and are ranked 29th in Division II with 18.3 assists per game while ranking ninth nationally with a 1.83 assist/turnover ratio. • Saint Martin’s enters the week tied for 24th in the D2SIDA Division II Media Poll and is among teams receiving votes in the NABC Division II Coaches Poll. • Saint Martin’s will play a pair of Bay Area games this weekend, facing Notre Dame de Namur on Friday and Holy Names on Saturday. SEATTLE PACIFIC • Senior forward Coleman Wooten was named the GNAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week after he finished with 25 points and 23 rebounds in the contests. Wooten opened by finishing with seven points and 12 rebounds against Westminster. He then collected a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds, which included five offensive boards, to go with two assists in Saturday’s 83-65 win over Azusa Pacific. Wooten shot 47.8 percent from the field while playing a team-high 59 minutes. He enters the week leading the GNAC and ranked eighth in Division II with 11.5 rebounds per game while averaging 12.5 points per game. • Junior guard Gavin Long finished with 28 points in the two games connecting on 57.1 percent of his shots from the field. He led the Falcons with 19 points on 8 of 13 from the field against Westminster and then finished with nine points against Azusa Pacific. Long leads the Falcons with 14 points per game. • Seattle Pacific enters the week averaging 82 points and 37.5 rebounds per game. The Falcons are 13th in Division II in fewest fouls with 26 while leading the GNAC and ranking 18th in Division II with a .444 three-point percentage. • The Falcons travel to San Diego this weekend to participate in the Point Loma Thanksgiving Classic. Seattle Pacific plays St. Cloud State on Friday and Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday. SIMON FRASER • Sophomore center Julian Roche led the Clan with 31 points and 18 rebounds in the two games, shooting 57.1 percent from the field. Roche opened the tournament with a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds on 8 of 13 shooting from the field against Humboldt State. He then finished with 13 points and seven rebounds against Minn. St. Moorhead. Roche enters the week averaging 12.8 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. • Junior guard Othniel Spence added 29 points in the two games. He finished with eight points and four rebounds against Humboldt State before leading all scorers with 21 points on 7 of 9 from the field and 5 of 7 from three-point against Minn. St. Moorhead. Spence is tied for sixth in the GNAC with 15.3 points per game. • The Clan saw four players score in double figures against Minn. St. Moorhead. Freshman guard Drew Bryson came off the bench to score 20 points on 8 of 12 from the field and 4 of 7 from three-point range. Junior guard Michael Provenzano added 16 points on 3 of 3 from the field and 9 of 10 from the free throw line. Freshman guard Wilifried Balata, meanwhile, scored 22 points and had seven rebounds to lead SFU against Humboldt State. • Simon Fraser enters the week averaging 70.8 points and 36.5 rebounds per game. The Clan is third in the GNAC in scoring defense, allowing 72.2 points per game and third with a .737 free throw percentage. • The Clan will host a pair of Canadian rivals this week, welcoming Columbia Bible on Thursday and Capilano on Saturday. WESTERN OREGON • Sophomore guard Darius Lubom led the Wolves with 29 points in the two games, shooting 55.6 percent from the field. He opened the season bu leading WOU with 19 points on 6 of 10 from the field against Warner Pacific and then finished with 10 points, four rebounds, four steals and three assists against Colorado Christian. Lubom is 10th in the GNAC with 14.5 points per game. • Senior forward Kaleb Warner and junior guard Jaylyn Richardson each had 20 points in their Western Oregon debut weeks. Warner opened the season with 17 points on 7 of 14 from the field against Warner Pacific. Richardson scored 10 points in both games and went a perfect 6 of 6 from the free throw line while adding 13 rebounds. • The Wolves enter the week averaging 72 points and 32 rebounds per game. The Wolves lead the GNAC in both field goal defense (.350) and three-point defense (.241), ranking eighth in Division II in the latter category. • Western Oregon will travel to St. George, Utah, for the Dixie State Thanksgiving Classic this weekend. The Wolves will play Westminster (Utah) on Friday and the host Trailblazers on Saturday. WESTERN WASHINGTON • Junior forward Trevor Jasinsky led the Vikings with 42 points and 13 rebounds in the two games. He opened the week with 21 points and six rebounds against Minn. St. Moorhead, connecting on 8 of 18 from the field and 4 of 7 from three-point range. He also scored 21 points against Humboldt State to go with seven rebounds. Jasinsky leads the GNAC and is 20th in Division II with 24.3 points per game. He is sixth in Division II with 28 free throws made. • Junior guard Micah Winn scored 30 points in the two contests. He did his most damage against Humboldt State as he led the Vikings with 22 points on 7 of 17 from the field, 4 of 8 from three-point range and 4 of 6 from the free throw line. Winn enters the week ranked ninth in the GNAC with 14.8 points per game. • Western Washington slipped one spot to No. 15 in this week’s NABC Division II Coaches Poll, but also dropped out of the D2SIDA Division II Media Poll. • Western Washington enters the week third in the GNAC in scoring at 84.2 points per game and fifth with 36.8 rebounds per game. The Vikings lead the GNAC and rank fourth in Division II with six blocked shots per game. • The Vikings will host a pair of Canadian rivals this weekend, taking on Capilano on Friday and Langara on Saturday. |
