PORTLAND, Ore.  –   Seattle Pacific University basketball standout David Downs has been voted the 2013-14 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Male Athlete of the Year and Male Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Downs, who earned the Scholar-Athlete award for the second year in a row, is the first male athlete in GNAC history to sweep the conference’s two major awards and the second to win the Scholar-Athlete award twice.

The selections are made by the conference’s athletic directors.

Downs (Kirkland, WA – Bellevue Christian) led the Falcons to a 26-6 record and to the GNAC’s regular-season and tournament championships and to a No. 2 seed in the NCAA West Regional tournament.

He finished his career as the No. 9 all-time scorer in GNAC history with 1,786 points.  He also ended up ranked fourth in conference history in career assists with 561 and seventh in three-pointers made with 245.

This past season he ranked third in the conference in scoring averaging 20.4 points per game and fourth in assists (4.7).  He also ranked third nationally in three-point accuracy shooting 47.4 percent (82 of 173) from the arc.

Downs was a consensus All-American on the court and in the classroom.

On the court, he earned four All-American awards.  He was a first team NABC Coaches and Basketball Times All-American selection and was a second team Daktronics and Division II Bulletin honoree. 

The Daktronics team is selected by the nation’s sports information directors who also selected Downs the NCAA Division II West Region Player of the Year.

He was also selected the GNAC Player of the Year and was the Most Valuable Player in the GNAC post-season tournament earning the latter award for the second year in a row.

In four seasons at SPU, he led the Falcons to a 96-28 record becoming the winningest player in school history.

In the classroom, the accounting major posted a 3.77 grade point average and was selected a CoSIDA Academic first team All-American earning CoSIDA All-American honors for the second year in a row and all-region honors for the third time.

He was also SPU’s Scholar-Athlete award winner and was selected to the GNAC Academic All-Conference team for the third year in a row.

By virtue of earning the GNAC Scholar-Athlete award he will now be a candidate for the NCAA Division II  Conference Commissioner’s West Region Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.
