PORTLAND, Ore. - Ryan Looney, who led Seattle Pacific to a 26-6 record and a No. 2 seed in the West Region tournament, has been voted the NCAA Division II NABC West Region Coach of the Year.

Looney, a 1998 graduate of Eastern Oregon, has compiled a 118-34 record in five seasons at SPU.  His overall collegiate head coaching record in 10 seasons is 213-89.

Two of Looney's players - guard David Downs, who earlier was selected the GNAC and Daktronics West Region Player of the Year, and forward Patrick Simon - were among four GNAC players named to the all-region first team.  Downs, who averaged 20.4 points and 4.7 assists, was selected to the NABC first team for the second year in a row.

Also named to the first team were center Austin Bragg and guard Richard Woodworth of Western Washington.  Selected to the second team were guards Mark McLaughlin of Central Washington and Travis Thompson of Alaska Anchorage.

Downs' selection earned him a first team sweep of the two all-region teams.  He earlier was voted to the Daktronics team selected by the region's sports information directors.

Simon and Bragg were second team selections and McLaughlin was a first team pick on the Daktronics team.

The first team selectees are now eligible for consideration to the NABC and Daktronics All-Americans teams which will be announced later this month.
