FIRST WEEK OF CONFERENCE PLAY PROVIDES INTRIGUE: The first week of GNAC play was a reminder that when it comes right down to it, all that matters is the outcomes on the court.

Five conference teams came out of the week with 2-0 records. Three of those performances would be considered expected. Simon Fraser, picked to finish third in the preseason coaches poll, scored a 77-74 win over preseason favorite Western Washington on Tuesday and then added an 88-76 victory over Montana State Billings on Thursday.

Seattle Pacific, picked second, collected a solid pair of road wins at Central Washington on Thursday, 76-66, and at Northwest Nazarene on Saturday, 77-68. Alaska Anchorage went 2-0 in a pair of home games, registering an 81-74 win over Concordia on Thursday and an 88-86 overtime win over Western Oregon on Saturday.

The two unexpected members of the 2-0 club are Alaska and Saint Martin’s. The Nanooks handed Western Oregon its first loss of the season on Thursday, 72-66, and then outlasted Concordia in a double-overtime thriller on Saturday, 116-111. Picked to finish 10th, Alaska opened the season 1-7 before the two wins.

Saint Martin’s, meanwhile, took to the road for a pair of convincing wins. The Saints, picked 11th, collected an 84-63 win at Northwest Nazarene on Thursday and a 79-76 win at Central Washington on Saturday.

ALASKA EARNS TEAM OF WEEK STATUS: As frigid as Fairbanks was last week, the Alaska men’s basketball team got off to a hot start in GNAC play as the Nanooks won their first two conference games at home to snap a six-game skid and earn selection as the GNAC Team of the Week.

The Nanooks opened their conference schedule with a 72-66 win over previously unbeaten Western Oregon on Thursday then edged out Concordia, 116-111, in a thrilling double-overtime game on Saturday at the Patty Center.

Down by seven points to Western Oregon at the half, the Nanooks turned things around and shot 59.3 percent from the field, outscoring the Wolves, 41-28, in the second half to run away with a win in their conference opener. The Nanooks finished the game with a .490 field goal percentage and scored 21 points off of 16 turnovers.

“We dug ourselves into a hole so we made some changes and some guys stepped up,” head coach Greg Sparling said. “We had an extremely challenging non-conference season with eight games on the road in three states but we got back home and the crowd was great.”

Alaska’s hot streak carried into Saturday’s win over the Cavaliers as the Nanooks shot 58.2 percent from the field and 42.1 percent from three-point range in a double-overtime game that consisted of 12 ties and 26 lead changes. The Nanooks scored 44 points in the paint and 24 points off of 17 turnovers by the Cavs.
