PORTLAND, Ore. – One of the leaders behind the resurgence of Western Oregon women’s soccer is also among the tops in the classroom as Wolves’ senior Selene Konyn is among the leaders of the 2019 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer All-Academic Team.

Konyn is among four players selected to the team with a perfect 4.00 GPA. An early childhood education major in the classroom, Konyn has performed well on the pitch at midfield. A starter in all nine matches this season, Konyn enters the week with three goals and two assists and tallied the game-winning goal in the Sept. 21 3-2 overtime victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Two of the other three 4.00 GPAs come from Montana State Billings in senior Amanda Hemmen and sophomore Abby Hamilton. Hemmen, a biology major, has started in all nine matches this season while Hamilton, also majoring in biology, is one of the Yellowjackets’ backup goalkeepers. The other 4.00 GPA belongs to Seattle Pacific sophomore Mariah Alexander, who is majoring in business administration.

A total of 99 student-athletes were named to the All-Academic Team, which recognizes academic success alongside athletic achievement. To qualify for selection, a student-athlete must be of sophomore standing or greater, have a minimum cumulative 3.20 GPA, be a letterwinner with her team and must be in her second season at the nominating institution.

The four 4.00 GPAs are among 16 student-athletes that have a 3.90 GPA or better. In addition, 29 student-athletes have GPAs of 3.80 or better.

Of the 99, 44 are repeat selections to the All-Academic Team. Eighteen of those are three-time selections while Simon Fraser senior Carli Grosso earned selection for a fourth time.

Seattle Pacific leads all GNAC teams with 16 All-Academic selections, accounting for over 61 percent of the program’s active roster. Montana State Billings was close behind with 15 selections. All but one of the nine GNAC teams had at least 10 selections.
