NAMPA, Idaho — Northwest Nazarene’s All-American midfielder Julio Castillo is getting his shot to play soccer at the next level.

Last week, the recent Crusader graduate signed a professional contract to play for Sävsjö FF in Sävsjö, Sweden, and has already begun practice with his new team.

Castillo and Sävsjö FF, which plays in the fourth division of the Swedish pro soccer league, open play this Thursday.

“It feels great,” Castillo said of signing to play professional soccer. “It’s a great satisfaction because to be a pro there’s so many sacrifices that have to be made and countless hours of work. No matter what pro level you play, it’s not easy at all.

“I’m very happy to be here.”

During his two-year career with NNU, Castillo was twice named National Soccer Coaches Association of American All-American, earning first team honors after his junior season and honorable mention recognition following his senior campaign.

In 36 games for the Crusaders, the product of Tijuana, Mexico, had five goals and 24 assists, which included setting a GNAC single-season record of 15 assists as a senior.

Now, Castillo takes his play-making skills to the next level as he looks to set up his teammates in Sweden for victory.

“It’s a big change because everything is different, but what I do is simple, adjust and adapt,” Castillo said of playing pro soccer in another country. “Practices are not the same as in the U.S., the style is different and there’s other different details, but it’s been fun and I know I will enjoy the ride and become a better soccer player after this season because of the experience I’m getting here.”
