ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Central Washington University reliever CJ Gettman was selected in the 34th round by the San Francisco Giants in the 2016 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.  Gettman is the first Wildcat baseball player to be drafted since 2012, when Brandon Rohde was selected in the 25th round by the Atlanta Braves.
 
“It’s a dream come true,” Gettman said.  “I’ve been waiting for this day for a long time.  It’s pretty surreal right now, I’m not sure it has totally set in yet.  I’m extremely thankful to be able to continue my career and excited to get to work as a Giant.”
 
Gettman, a junior, appeared in 20 games this season and made one start.  In 26 innings, he earned eight saves, second most among pitchers in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.  The right-hander struck out 40 hitters and held opposing hitters to a .227 average.  He led the GNAC in games finished (17) and strikeouts among relievers (40), while he finished second in appearances (20) and relief outings (19).
 
Serving as the Wildcats’ closer for the 2016 season, Gettman consistently registered between 92-94 miles per hour on a radar gun.  The Wenatchee, Wash. native earned First Team All-GNAC honors in his lone season at Central Washington.
 
“CJ is a tremendous talent and impact player,” said head baseball coach Desi Storey.  “He was a key piece to our success this season.  I’m extremely proud to have been able to coach him.  The Giants are getting a guy who is an extremely hard worker and an even better individual.  We wish him the best of luck and will certainly be following his journey.”
 
Gettman transferred to CWU from Wenatchee Valley Community College.  He is a 2012 graduate of Wenatchee High School.
