For 3rd Straight Season, Clan & Vikings Earn Regional Berths

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Simon Fraser and Western Washington men’s golf teams have become regulars at the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf South Central/West Super Regional Championships, being selected to the tournament together for the third straight season.

Simon Fraser finished the season ranked No. 3 in the West Region while Western Washington ranked No. 9. The 10 West Region teams selected will travel to Las Cruces, N.M., and will be joined by 10 teams from the South Central Region to play three rounds at the Western New Mexico State University Golf Course May 2-4.

The Vikings are coming off their seventh all-time team title at the GNAC Championships, winning by 18 strokes while tying the tournament record score of 837. Brett Johnson was the medalist, shooting a GNAC Championships record 10-under-par 203. Western Washington is making its 18th straight trip to the regional championships and placed 19th in last year’s regionals.

Simon Fraser placed third at the GNAC Championships, but still lead the conference in average round score at 291.7 through 24 rounds. The Clan tied for third place at regionals in 2015 and tied for fifth at the national championships.

The Clan’s Chris Crisologo leads the GNAC with an average round score of 71. He is followed by three Vikings: Johnson (72.5), Chris Hatch (73.5) and Michael Butler (73.6), and his Simon Fraser teammate Kevin Vigna (73.6).

Simon Fraser ranks 15th in Division II in average round score according to GolfStat. Crisologo ranks third individually followed by Johnson in 27th.

The top-five teams and top-two golfers from each regional are guaranteed to advance to the NCAA National Championships May 17-21 at Green Valley Ranch in Denver, Colo.
