ELLENSBURG, Wash. - The Central Washington University Department of Athletics is excited to announce a new athletics brand identity.

The new brand identity is exclusive to CWU Athletics and includes a new primary mark, secondary marks, as well as a custom typography and numbers.

“Our goal was to develop a complete and unifying brand identity that reflects the current status and aspirations of the CWU Athletics program,” Director of Athletics Dennis Francois said. “We wanted a brand that complements and supports the current cat head logo.”

Central Washington student-athletes, who got their first look at the new branding, had high praise for the logo.

“I’m excited to see the change, it really stands out to me,” football linebacker Eric Ledesma said of the new marks. “It is something that I will be proud to wear.”

The primary mark is a head-on version of CWU’s side-facing cat head mark, with CWU arched above. The cat head evokes a sense of energy, empowerment, and inclusion. It serves to represent the competitive and high-caliber nature of CWU Athletics.

“The intent for rebranding was to create an identity that is uniquely athletics,” CWU Assistant Director of External Affairs Tyler Unsicker said. “But still retain that inclusive feeling. The new marks are the visual identity of CWU’s movement upward, and we believe our students will love the new look.”

The brand identity is slated for a soft release and will be executed as financially responsible as possible.

“Again, we’d like to thank the committee and Joe Bosack & Co. for their hard work throughout this project.” Francois added. “We are excited to begin a new era of CWU Athletics.”

Apparel with the new marks will be available at the CWU Bookstore in fall 2016.
