PORTLAND, Ore. – Azusa Pacific has been known for its excellence both in the classroom and on the field since joining the conference in 2012. This year, that is even more emphatic as the Cougars account for over half of the 2019 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Football All-Academic Team.
Of the 49 honorees on the squad, 25 of them are Azusa Pacific players. Selections to the team must be of sophomore standing or greater, be a letterwinner on the team, be in their second season of competition at the nominating school and hold a minimum of a 3.20 cumulative grade point average.
The Cougars’ list includes 13 repeat selections and two three-time honorees in senior wide receiver Lucas Widmer and senior defensive lineman Clay Garcelli.
A total of 20 players on the GNAC Football All-Academic Team are repeat selections. Joining Widmer and Garcelli as three-time selections are Western Oregon seniors Ty Currie, Derek Parnell and Joey Roos.
The list includes eight players who have a 3.60 cumulative GPA or better. Only one player, Western Oregon junior Drew Tingstad, owns a perfect 4.00 GPA.
