WWU Signs JC All-American Linebacker (7/1/08)

Middle linebacker Jonathan Ve'e, who earned first-team Junior College All-America honors at Laney College in Oakland, Calif., has signed a scholarship agreement to play football at Western Washington University.

“He gives us a big, physical middle linebacker,” said WWU coach Robin Ross. “Losing (honorable mention All-American) Shane Simmons to graduation and Andre Davis who is recovering from knee surgery, he's going to be a definite help in an area where we've had some major losses.”

The 6-foot-2, 250-pound Ve'e, who also earned Mid-Empire Conference honors, helped the Eagles to a 10-1 record, a league title, and a victory in the Graffiti Bowl game that decided the Northern California “B” Conference championship.

A team captain, Ve'e was credited with 75 tackles six fumble recoveries, four pass interceptions, two quarterback sacks, two forced fumbles and two blocked kicks. He returned two interceptions for touchdowns and recovered two fumbles in the end zone.

As a freshman, Ve'e led a 9-2 team with 77 tackles. Ve'e was a first-team CalHiSports.com all-State selection and most valuable player of the Alameda-Contra Costa Athletic League as a senior at Alameda ( Calif. ) High School. He was a two-time, two-way all-league pick.

Vikings Add QB From Washington State (6/27/08)

Quarterback Cole Morgan, a transfer from Washington State has signed a scholarship agreement to play football at Western Washington University beginning this fall.

Morgan will be the second ex-WSU quarterback playing in the GNAC this season, joining Central Washington three-year starter Mike Reilly.

Also signing with the Vikings is strong safety/outside linebacker Derek Diaz from Los Madanos Junior College (Pittsburg , Calif. ).

Morgan was listed as No.3 on the Washington State depth chart last season. He did not see action, but played in one game the previous year against Idaho after being a redshirt in 2005.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Morgan was a three-time second-team all-Kingco League selection at Ballard High School, being listed as a red chip on the Seattle Times Top 100 list of state prep seniors and playing in the East-West all-star game as a senior.

That season, Morgan helped the Beavers to the championship game of the Class 4A state playoffs, completing 128 of 217 passes for 1,816 yards and 26 touchdowns with just 11 interceptions. He was ranked No.70 nationally among quarterbacks by TheInsiders.com and his position coach at Ballard was WSU quarterback legend Jack Thompson.

“I was impressed when he came up here, meeting with him, and the things I heard from the Washington State coaching staff,” said WWU coach Robin Ross. “He will be competing for playing time and the biggest thing for us is that we now have a quarterback in our junior class.”

Diaz, who is 6-foot and weighs 225 pounds, was a first-team all-Golden Gate Conference choice for the second straight year as a sophomore at Madanos, being a team captain and defensive most valuable player.

He was credited with 88 tackles, having three quarterback sacks, seven forced fumbles, seven pass breakups, four fumble recoveries and two pass interceptions. (Additional WWU Recruits)
