WICHITA, Kan. – Former University of Alaska Anchorage cross country and track and field student-athlete Henry Cheseto passed away Wednesday morning (Dec. 12).
“What a tragic loss for the many friends and family who knew Henry,” said associate athletic director and head coach cross country and track and field coach Michael Friess. “He will certainly be remembered by our UAA cross-country and track & field family.”
Cheseto was driving outside of Wichita, Kansas, when the car he was driving collided with a garbage truck. He died at the scene.
Cheseto was a two-time All-American in cross country, finishing as high as third in 2015. He was a two-time NCAA West Region champion and was the GNAC cross country champion in 2014 and 2015. Chesetowon the GNAC championship in indoor track and field in the 5,000 meters in both 2014 and 2015 and was a six-time All-GNAC selection.
Among Cheseto’s survivors is his brother, Marko, who also was a member of the UAA cross-country and track & field program from (2009-11) and recently set the world record time 2:52.33 (6:35 pace) for a below the knee bilateral/double amputee on prosthetics at the New York City Marathon.
