Pixler Wins National Title, Seattle Pacific Claims Best-Ever Team Finish (11/17/07)

Jessica Pixler completed her own personal triple crown Saturday winning the NCAA Division II women's cross country title at Joplin, Mo., and leading Seattle Pacific to second place in the team standings, its best-ever finish.

Pixler, who previously had won the GNAC and NCAA West Region titles, covered the 6,000 meter layout on the campus of Missouri Southern University in a course-record time of 20:29.1.

Pixler finished 13.6 seconds ahead of Winrose Karunde of Abilene Christian.

The SPU sophomore was one of five GNAC athletes to earn All-American honors Saturday, which go to the Top 30 finishers with additional berths awarded to the Top 30 American-born athletes.

Joining Pixler in the Top 30 on the women's side were teammate Jane Larson, who placed ninth and Ashley Puga of Northwest Nazarene, who finished 19th.

Led by Puga and Larson, SPU finished a distant-second to Adams State in the team standings. Adams placed five runners in the Top 25 and posted a team score of 63.

The Falcons, whose previous best team finish was third in 1986, had a team score of 178, three ahead of Grand Valley State, five ahead of Chico State and seven ahead of Cal State L.A.

Western Washington placed 11th in the men's race as Bennett Grimes earned All-American honors finishing 43rd in a 10,000 meter time of 31:46.5.

Alaska Anchorage's David Kiplagat also earned All-American honors placing 26th, the best finish by a Seawolf since Tobias Schwoerer finished 35th in 2001.

Nicodemus Naimadu won his fourth consecutive national title, the first athlete to complete that feat in NCAA cross country history in any division, in a time of 29:39.7 as he led Abilene Christian to their second consecutive team title.

Chico State placed sixth in the men's team standings for the top finish by a West Region team. With three women's West Region teams and one men's West Region team finishing in the Top 8, the region will be awarded five women's team berths and three men's berths in the 2008 meet.

Seattle Pacific, Pixler Win Women's Regional Titles (11/3/07)

Seattle Pacific sophomore Jessica Pixler successfully defended her individual title leading the Falcons to their first women's team title in more than a decade Saturday in the NCAA Division II West Regional Cross Country championships at Eagle, Idaho.

Pixler, who won last year's championship in a time of 20:46.1 and then went on to place 10th in the national meet, covered the 6,000 meter Eagle Island State Park layout in a time of 19:52.9, finishing 33 seconds ahead of her teammate Jane Larson, who placed second in a time of 20:26.0. Sarah Montez of Chico State placed third in a time of 20:27.0.

Seattle Pacific placed three athletes in the top six and four in the Top 15 and outpointed defending champ Cal State L.A. 45-54 to win the team title, its first since edging UC Davis 56-59 for the 1996 crown.

Chico State finished third with 64 points and UC San Diego placed fourth with 125. All four teams advance to the NCAA national championships Saturday, Nov. 17 at Joplin, Mo.

Also qualifying for the national meet as individuals were Ashley Puga of Northwest Nazarene, who finished fourth in a time of 20:35.5 and Sarah Porter of Western Washington who placed 13th in a time of 21:15.9. Karla Alburez of Cal State L.A., who won the CCAA title two weeks ago, finished fifth in a time of 20:44.8.

Seattle Pacific is the first Great Northwest Athletic Conference team to win the regional title since Central Washington won in 2000. Pixler's time is also the only sub 20 minute time in the regional championships in at least the last 10 years.

The top 15 finishers are awarded all-region honors. SPU and Cal State L.A. each grabbed four all-region berths, while Chico placed three in the Top 15. Cal State Stanislaus, UC San Diego, Northwest Nazarene and Western Washington had one each.

Riak Wins Region Title; Vikings Qualify For Nationals (11/3/07)

Chico State placed six runners in the Top 15 and cruised to its sixth consecutive NCAA Division II West Regional men's cross country team title Saturday.

Tim Tollefson led the Wildcats finishing third in a 10,000 meter time of 30:40.20.

Chico finished with 39 team points finishing well ahead of Great Northwest Athletic Conference champion Western Washington, which finished second with 93 points. UC San Diego edged Western Oregon 135-140 for third place.

Chico State, Western Washington and UC San Diego all qualified for the NCAA Division II national meet Saturday, Nov. 17 at Joplin, Mo.

John Riak of Saint Martin's won the region's individual title covering the 10,000-meter layout at Eagle Island State Park in a time of 30:32.75. Two weeks ago Riak won the GNAC title.

Riak was one of three GNAC athletes to qualify for the national meet as individuals. Sam Scotchmer of Central Washington, who placed second in a time of 30:35.40, and David Kiplagat of Alaska Anchorage, who placed fourth in a time of 30:44.78, also secured national berths.

Chico, which has had an average winning margin of 58 points during its six-year title run, dominated the all-region team with six selections. Also earning regional berths from Chico State with Top 15 finishes in addition to Tollefson were Brendan Scanlon (8th), Michael Wickman (10th), Manny Mejia (11th), Jordan Page (12th) and Angel Marquez (15th).

Only one other school – Cal State Stanislaus- had more than one runner in the Top 15. The Warriors' Vincente Moreno, who won the CCAA individual title two weeks ago, placed sixth in a time of 30:50.20. CSUS' Bobby Olivera placed 14th .

Saint Martin's, Central Washington, Alaska Anchorage, Western Washington, Humboldt State, Western Oregon and Brigham Young-Hawaii all placed one runner in the Top 15.

MSUB Women Win Own Invitational (10/27/07)

Dianna Stanley finished third and Montana State Billings placed four women in the top seven in winning their own invitational cross country meet Saturday at Billings.

MSUB finished with a team score of 26, well-ahead of Dickinson State (48) and Carroll (58).

Jepkiuri Rose of Dickinson State paced the women's 5k race winning in a time of 18:10.  Stanley was clocked in a time of 19:30.

Dickinson dominated the men's four-mile taking first through fourth places.  Parra Porfirio took top honors turning in a 20:21.  Jarred Rensvold was MSUB's top finisher placing sixth with a 21:15. 

Dickinson won the team race totaling 17 points.  Carroll College just clipped the Yellowjackets for second place 64-65.

Vikings, Falcons Repeat In GNAC Meet (10/20/07)

SPU sophomore Jessica Pixler successfully defended her individual title in meet record time and Seattle Pacific won the women's team title for the third year in a row in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference cross country championships at West Park in Nampa, Idaho, Saturday.

Western Washington repeated as the men's team champions, placing four freshmen in the Top 10. John Riak of Saint Martin's was the individual winner, earning his 11th career victory and extending his own GNAC record.

Pixler literally ran away from the field to win GNAC Female Athlete-of-the-Year honors covering the 6,000-meter layout in a time of 20:53.48. Her winning time of 21:11 last year at Lacey was the previous fastest time in meet history.

Pixler finished nearly a full minute ahead of the field. SPU's Jane Larson crossed the finish line second in a time of 21:45.32.

In all five Falcon athletes earned all-conference honors with Top 10 finishes as Seattle Pacific posted a team score of 24, the lowest in meet history, shattering their old record of 34 set last season.

Western Oregon was a surprising second with a team score of 99. Six GNAC teams came into the meet ranked ahead of WOU in the latest NCAA West Regional poll and the Wolves finished ahead of five of them.

Joining Pixler and Larson in the Top 10 were teammates Suzie Strickler (4th), Karin Rohde (7th) and Kate Harline (10th), Rohde earned all-conference honors for the third time. She was also a Top 10 finisher in 2004 and 2006 and is just the fifth women to earn three Top 10 career finishes.

Also earning all-conference honors were Ashley Puga of Northwest Nazarene (3rd), Katie Hansen of Seattle University (5th), Marcie Mullen of Central Washington (6th), Elizabeth Chepkosgei of Alaska Anchorage (8th) and Sarah Porter of Western Washington (9th).

Porter earned GNAC Freshman-of-the-Year honors with the highest finish by a first-year athlete. Jessica Harper of Western Oregon placed 12th to win the GNAC Newcomer-of-the-Year award.

In the men's 8,000-meter race, several runners took turns sharing the lead before Riak took command in the final 2,000-meter lap to win his first conference cross country title in a time of 24:56.77.

WWU freshmen Daniel Phillips and Bennett Grimes finished second and third in times of 25:05.96 and 25:09.03. The Vikings freshmen class also produced two other Top 10 finishes - Blake Medhaug was eighth in 25:40.82 and Jordon Welling was 10th in 25:56.31.

Also earning all-conference honors with Top 10 finishes were Central Washington's Sam Scotchmer (4th), Kevin Lambert of Northwest Nazarene (5th), Mike Schmidt (6th) and Braxton Jackson (9th) of Western Oregon and Peter Donor of Alaska Anchorage (7th).

UAA's David Kiplagat, the defending individual champion, placed 17th. Scotchmer joined an exclusive group of three other runners - joining Louie White of Humboldt State (1999-02) and Sean Rivers (1999-00, 02) and Eric Strabel (2000-02) of Alaska Anchorage - to win all-conference honors three or more times on the men's side.

With its freshmen leading the way, Western Washington outpointed Western Oregon 35-67 to win its third conference title. The Vikings also won in 2003 in addition to last year.

The Vikings matched their 2006 winning total despite running without Anthony Tomsich, one of the pre-race favorties. Tomsich, who placed third last year, sat out to rest a sore achilles' tendon.

Riak earned GNAC Athlete-of-the-Year honors with his first-place finish, while Phillips won GNAC Freshman-of-the-Year honors. The GNAC Newcomer-of-the-Year award was claimed by Doner.

Puga, Lambert Win at Eastern Oregon (10/13/07)

Northwest Nazarene's Ashley Puga and Kevin Lambert won their respective races Saturday in the Eastern Oregon Invitational cross country meet at LaGrande.

Puga won the women's 3,000 in a time of 10:40 to lead the Crusaders to the team title, while Lambert took first in the men's 5,000 with a time of 15:43 as NNU finished second.

Vikings, Falcons Win at Lake Padden (10/6/07)

Anthony Tomsich and Bennett Grimes finished first and second and Blake Medhaug placed fifth as nationally 12th-ranked Western Washington raced to an easy team victory in the 34th annual Western Washington Invitational cross country meet at Lake Padden Saturday.

Tomsich covered the 10K course in 32:15.1, 3.8 seconds ahead of his teammate. John Riak of Saint Martin's (32:32.1) and Sam Scotchmer of Central Washington (32:53.1) placed third and fourth, respectively. Medhaug posted a time of 32:57.9.

Jessica Pixler won the women's 6K in a time of 21:55.6, 22.2 seconds ahead of Elizabeth Chepkosgei of Alaska Anchorage, to lead seventh-ranked Seattle Pacific to the women's team title. It was her third win of the season in four races. SPU's Suzie Strickler was third in 22:50.3.

Both the Viking men and the Falcon women placed five runners in the Top 9 in waltzing to the team victories. WWU did SPU two better, also earning the 10th and 11th spots in the men's race. Four of the Vikings' top seven finishers are redshirt freshmen.

The host Vikings finished with a team score of 20, winning their third straight team title, their sixth in the last eight years and their 11th overall in WWU's annual home invitational.

Central Washington finished second with 58 points and Seattle was third with 85. Seattle Pacific had a team score of 25 in the women's race. Seattle placed second with 65 and WWU edged UAA 82-84 for third place.

Western Oregon Sweeps Team Titles at Pacific Lutheran

Led by Braxton Jackson and Tricia Morrison, Western Oregon swept the team titles Saturday in the Pacific Lutheran Invitational at Tacoma.

Jackson finished second in the men's race as the Wolves placed six runners in the Top 12 (at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12) as they outscored second-place Whitworth 30 to 47.

Jackson covered the 8,000 meters in 25:15.36. Nicholas Gallagher of Whitworth won the race in 25:08.81.

In the women's race, the Wolves placed just two runners in the Top 10 - Morrison in fifth (22:39.04) and Shirlon Moncrief in eighth (22:44.48) on the 6K course, but WOU also had the 11th, 12th and 13th place finishers and were able to outscore runner up Whitman 44-54.

Saint Martin's Fourth in Steilberg Open

Saint Martin's finished fourth in the women's division at the fifth annual Pete Steilberg Open cross country meet at Olympia Saturday. Jessie Dunnam was the Saints' top finisher, placing 16th in a time of 19:22.05.

The Saints split their men's squad sending runners to Bellingham and Olympia and didn't field a complete team in either meet. Josh Gatbunton was 18th in a time of 27:12 on the 8,000 meter layout at Olympia.

Kiplagat, Chepkosgei Lead UAA at Willamette (9/29/07)

David Kiplagat and Elizabeth Chepkosgei of Alaska Anchorage had the best individual finishes for GNAC athletes Saturday at Willamette's 33rd annual Charles Bowles Invitational cross country meet at Salem, Ore.

Kiplagat finished third in the men's 8,000 in a time of 24:29.05. John Riak of Saint Martin's was fifth, 8.61 seconds in back of the Seawolf runner.

Chepkosgei placed second in the women's 5,000 in a time of 17:31.10. Ashley Puga of Northwest Nazarene finished fifth in 17:46.05.

UAA placed fifth in the men's team standings, while Seattle University finished sixth in the women's race.

Montana State Billings Seventh, Eighth at Colorado

Montana State Billings finished seventh and eighth in the women's and men's college divisions, respectively, at the Rocky Mountain Shootout cross country meet at Boulder, Colo., Saturday.

The non-Division I women's race featured 11 teams while the men's race had nine.

Pixler Wins Title at Boise (9/22/07)

In a possible preview of the NCAA Division II meet later this fall, Seattle Pacific and Chico State tied for second in the women's division of the Bob Firman Cross Country Invitational Saturday at Eagle Island State Park in Boise, Idaho.

Boise State won the women's team title with 50 points, while the two Division II national powers finished second with 71 points on the course that will serve as the host site for the NCAA Division II regional in November.

Jessica Pixler of Seattle Pacific won the women's individual title in a time of 18:00.44 on the 5,000 meter layout. The regional race will be 6,000 meters.

Western Washington and Northwest Nazarene placed seventh and eighth, respectively, each placing one runner in the Top 10. NNU's Ashley Puga finished fourth in a time of 18:30.77. Sarah Porter of WWU placed eighth in a time of 18:37.13.

Chico State easily won the men's team title with 30 points. Western Washington placed seventh and NNU was 10th. The Vikings' Bennett Grimes was the only GNAC runner in the Top 10 finishing seventh in a time of 25:40.71.

Western Oregon Wins Saint Martin's Invitational

Western Oregon's men and women swept the team titles Saturday at the Saint Martin's Invitational cross country meet on the SMU campus in Lacey.

The WOU men topped Seattle Pacific and five other squads to win with 25 points, while the women also edged the second-place Falcons and a field of five with a 35-point total.

SPU's women were running with its second unit as its first unit competed Saturday at Boise. Western Washington also sent its top male and female runners to Boise and competed with its second unit at Lacey.

Saint Martin's John Riak finished first in the men's 8,000 meter race in a time of 25:14. WOU's Nik Karr finished in 25:44.  SPU's Lisa Anderberg won the women's 5K race in a time of 18:39, 14 seconds ahead of WOU freshman Tricia Morrison.

Scotchmer, Mullen Win Individual Titles

Sam Scotchmer and Marcie Mullen won individual titles for Central Washington in the Apple Ridge Run Invitational cross country meet in Yakima Saturday.

Scotchmer covered the men's 4 mile race in 21:05 to lead the Wildcats to the team title over Alaska Fairbanks and Everett CC. Central finished with a team score of 29, while the Nanooks and ECC posted scores of 36 and 60, respectively.

Mullen took home the women's 5,000 title in a time of 19:12. UAF, however, placed five runners in the Top 9 and outpointed the Wildcats 28-47. ECC finished with 56.

Stephanie Cooke and Mary Bakeman finished fifth and eighth, respectively.

MSUB Finishes Third at Dickinson (9/20/07)

Ler Mykel finished 10th to lead Montana State Billings to a third-place team finish in the women's division at the Dickinson State Invitational cross country meet Thursday at Dickinson, N.D.

Mykel was clocked in a time of 20:10 on the three-mile layout. Heidi Evans of North Dakota finished first in a time of 18:36.

In the men's 5-mile race, Jarred Rensvold led the Yellowjackets placing 16th in a time of 28:06.

Pixler Fourth in Sundodger Invitational at Lincoln Park (9/15/07)

In a performance superior to her winning of the open division a year ago, Seattle Pacific's Jessica Pixler ran fourth in the women's featured section at the Sundodger Invitational cross country meet Saturday in Lincoln Park.

The nationally fifth-ranked Falcons finished seventh among a field otherwise comprised of Division I programs.

Pixler was clocked 31 seconds faster than her time as a freshman on the same course. She battled for second place for much of the 6000 meters before being overtaken by two UW harriers.

The Huskies' Anita Campbell led comfortably from start to finish, crossing the line in 20 minutes, 20 seconds. Pixler's time was 21:04.

Western Washington's Anthony Tomsich also had a Top 10 finish in the men's invitational, placing ninth in a time of 24:22.

The Vikings were the only GNAC school to enter a complete team in the invitational division and placed a respectible fifth, finishing ahead of three Division I schools (Idaho, Santa Clara and San Francisco) and just 12 points behind UC Davis and Eastern Washington.

In the open division, Alaska Anchorage placed third despite not having the benefit of its No. 1 runner David Kiplagat, who finished 13th in the invitational division. Saint Martin's John Riak won the open division in a time of 24:35.

WWU and UAA had Top 5 finishes in the women's open division, placing fourth and fifth, respectively. Central Washington ended up sixth. Sarah Porter of WWU was the top GNAC placer, placing fourth in a time of 21:49.

Montana State Billings Ninth, 11th at Bozeman

Ryan Ceynar and Mykel Ler were the top finishers for Montana State Billings Saturday as the Yellowjacket men and women finished ninth and 11th, respectively, in the Montana State Invitational cross country meet at Bridger Creek Golf Course Saturday in Bozeman.

Ceynar placed 79th in the men's five mile in a time of 28:24, while Ler was 64th in the women's three mile in a time of 19:30.

Redhawks' Heitzinger Fourth at Portland (9/14/07)

Nathan Heitzinger of Seattle University finished fourth in the men's 8,000 meters in a time of 25:27.5 in the West Coast Preview cross country meet Friday at Pier Park in Portland.

Heitzinger finished in back of Colby Litzenberger of Gonzaga and two runners from the University of Portland. Litzenberger was timed in 25:05.7.

Western Oregon placed two runners in the Top 11 - Nik Karr (10th, 25:44.5) and Chris Reed (11th, 25:46.1) - to finish third in the men's team standings. Seattle placed fifth.

In the women's division, the Redhawks were fourth and Western Oregon placed fifth. Katie Hansen paced SU, finishing 13th on the 6,000 meter layout in a time of 22:38.

Falcons, Redhawks Win At Emerald City (9/8/07)

Jessica Pixler had no difficulty defending her title and No. 5-ranked Seattle Pacific won the women's competition at the Emerald City Invitational Saturday at Woodland Park.

Meanwhile, Seattle University placed five runners in the Top 12 to easily win the men's race.

Although she ran alone for the final 5000 meters of the 6k event, Pixler trimmed 13 seconds off her winning time of a year ago. Her victory, in 22:28.14,  was her fifth in six career races.

It was her first competition since winning the 1500-meter gold medal at the Pan American Junior Games two months ago in Brazil. Pixler was 10th in the NCAA Division II Championships last fall, and won national titles in the mile (indoor) and 1500 (outdoor) as a freshman.

With all five of their scorers among the top seven, SPU easily finished ahead of host Seattle University (22-53). Western Washington (60) was third.

Brian Cronrath, a Seattle Pacific senior redshirt competing unattached, won the men's 8k race in 27:17.61. Cronrath led most of the way, yielded to Western's Blake Medhaug on the final 500 meters, and then reclaimed the lead going into the final straightaway. Medhaug placed second in a time of 27:18.59.

Nathan Heitzinger, Nicholas Alvarado and Hans Heitzinger were fifth, sixth and seventh overall to lead Seattle to the team title.

Yellowjacket Women Second at South Dakota

Montana State Billings swept places eight through 14 to finish second in the women's division at the South Dakota School of Mines Invitational on Saturday. 

Freshman Diana Stanley placed eighth to lead MSUB.  The Jacket men placed third in the three-team men's race. Jarred Rensvold led the Yellowjackets with a seventh-place finish.

Stanley covered the 5K women's course in a time of 21:59.  She was one of six Yellowjackets running in a collegiate competition for the first time, and the youth movement carried the day for MSUB. 

Freshmen claimed the Jackets' top four spots.  Behind Stanley were Mykel Ler in ninth place with a time of 22:11, Katie Thiel in 10th with a time of 22:18 and Morgan Streeter in 11th with a 22:19. 

Black Hills State claimed the women's race with 17 points, followed by MSUB with 50, South Dakota School of Mines with 74, and Rocky Mountain College with 103.  Black Hills State 's Kerry Washburn took home top individual honors with a time of 19:23. 

In the men's race, Rensvold was the only Yellowjacket in the Top 10.  He finished the 8K course in 28:33.  Rensvold is the Jackets' only returning runner from last season. 

Black Hills State won the men's team race with a perfect score of 15 points as Rensvold was the only runner in the Top 12 not from the team champions.  

South Dakota Mines finished second with 58 points followed by the Yellowjackets with 66.  Allen Wood of BHSU won top individual honors in a time of 26:18

Puga, Lambert Lead Crusaders at NNU Fall Harrier Classic

Ashley Puga and Kevin Lambert placed second and sixth, respectively, to lead Northwest Nazarene in the fifth annual NNU Fall Harrier Classic at West Park in Nampa Saturday.

Puga was clocked in a time of 14:18.70 on the women’s 4-kilometer course, finishing five seconds in back of Boise State's Breanna Sande. Lambert posted a 6-kilometer time of 19:05.5.

In the team competitions the Crusaders finished third in the women’s race and fourth in the men’s competition.

Boise State University swept both team titles with Sande (14:13.60) and Cody Eaton (18:41.30) winning the individual crowns for the Broncos.

CWU Sweeps Northwest Titles (9/7/07)

Central Washington cruised to men's and women's victories in the Northwest Invitational cross country meet at Kirkland Friday.

Sam Scotchmer led the Wildcat men placing second on the four-mile layout in a time of 19:57. Scotchmer finished 20 seconds behind Saint Martin's John Riak, who was clocked in 19:37.

CWU also got a third place finish from freshman Nick Holt and a fifth from Scott Palmer in finishing 31 points ahead of runner-up Everett CC.

CWU also got a 1-2 finish from Marcie Mullen and Katie Hummel in edging Saint Martin's 37-38 for the women's title. Mullen finished first in a three-mile time of 17:12, six seconds ahead of Hummel and a minute ahead of SMU's Annie Lawreyson, who finished third.

UAF Women Earn Split on Short Course (9/1/07)

Alaska Fairbanks placed three runners in the top six in the women's race in earning a split of a three-way collegiate cross country race at Fairbanks.

Anna Coulter placed fourth on the 3,870 meter course in a time of 14:36.1, while Beth Zirbes and Nikkol Sipes finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in times of 14:36.1 and 14:38.3.

The Nanooks beat Hawaii Pacific 24-35, but lost to BYU-Hawaii 24-31. UAF's men lost to both Hawaii schools, falling to BYUH by one point (28-29) and to Hawaii Pacific 20-35. Vahur Teppan was the Nanooks' top placer, finishing fifth in a time of 11:51.4.

Seawolves Lose To Nationally Ranked Slippery Rock (9/1/07)

Nationally ranked Slippery Rock swept both the men's and women's overall titles at the season opening UAA Invitational, defeating the Alaska Anchorage men 18-41 and the women 23-36 Saturday at Kincaid Park .

Seawolf junior Elizabeth Chepkosgei claimed her first career victory by winning the women's individual title with a time of 18:39 on the 6K course. The Kenyan led nearly the entire race before winning by a margin of almost 30 seconds.

Two-time All-American Jeff Weiss of  No. 11-ranked Slippery Rock ran away with the men's 8K title by clocking a time of 22:41, finishing 26 seconds ahead of teammate Pat Reagan. David Kiplagat paced UAA's men with a third-place effort (23:21).

The 15th-ranked Rock women placed seven runners in the Top 10, led by race runner-up Katie Bork (19:08). Redshirt freshman Ciri Vail was the second Seawolf across the line in the women's race, placing fourth (19:51). Kaley Strachan also cracked the top 10 for UAA, placing eighth in 20:53.

Redshirt freshman Paul Rottich was the Seawolf men's second finisher, edging teammate Cornelious Sigei for seventh overall. Rottich clocked a 24:12 while Sigei recorded a time of 24:13.

Karr, Reed 1-2; Wolves Second in Opener (8/31/07)

Western Oregon's Nik Karr and Chris Reed ran 1-2 Friday in the WOU Summer's End Invitational to lead the Wolves to a second-place team finish in their 2007 season opener.

Karr covered the 8,000-meter course in a time of 25:01, two seconds ahead of his teammate. Wartburg, which didn't place anyone in the Top 5, still managed to edge the Wolves 42-43 in the team standings.

In the women's 5,000, Western Oregon also finished second in back of Wartburg by a 34-53 count. Shirlon Moncrief was WOU's top finisher, placing seventh in a time of 20:18.

Coulter Finishes Second in UAF Invitational (8/30/07)

Anna Coulter finished second in a 6,000-meter time of 24:49.4 to lead Alaska Fairbanks to wins over Hawaii Pacific and BYU-Hawaii Thursday in the UAF Invitational cross country meet.

The Nanook women outpointed Hawaii Pacific 26-31. BYU-Hawaii had only four finishers and did not record a team score.

On the men's side, BYUH edged the Nanooks 28-29. UAF also lost to Hawaii Pacific 26-32. Vahur Teppan placed sixth in an 8,000 meter time of 28:30.2 for UAF's best finish.

The three schools will compete in a 4,000 meter race on Saturday.
