PORTLAND, Ore. – For Northwest Nazarene, excellence means performing well both on the golf course and in the classroom.

The Nighthawks lead all teams in selections to the 2018-19 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Men’s Golf All-Academic Team. Northwest Nazarene’s seven selections account for 70 percent of the program’s total roster. It also accounts for 35 percent of the team’s 20 total selections.

The seven are led by junior Drew Lunt and senior Luke Vaartstra, who both lead the All-Academic Team with 3.96 cumulative grade point averages. Lunt, who is a financial economics major, owns a 78.9 stroke average in 19 rounds played this season. Vaartstra, who is majoring in psychology, has an 81.4 stroke average in seven rounds this season.

Vaartstra is one of four three-time selections on the All-Academic Team. He is joined by fellow Nighthawk senior Justin Higgins, Saint Martin’s senior Trevor Frisby and Western Washington senior Michael Butler. Lunt, meanwhile, one of seven two-time selections to the squad.

Selections to the GNAC All-Academic Teams must be of sophomore standing or greater, have a 3.20 cumulative grade point average or better and be in their second season of competition at the nominating institution.
