COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho - Western Washington has a five-shot lead over Simon Fraser after the  first two rounds of the 2013 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championships Presented by the Coeur 'd Alene Resort.

The Vikings had rounds of 291 and 290 Monday at the Coeur d'Alene Resort Golf Course, while the Clan recorded team scores of 292 and 294.  Saint Martin's is in third place with a 593 total.

WWU is 24 shots ahead of Saint Martin's (311-335) after Monday's opening round of the women's tournament.

Bret Thompson of Simon Fraser carded a two-under par 69 to take the men's medalist lead in the first round, but WWU's Jake Webb carded a 68 in the second round to open up a four-shot lead over SFU's John Mlikotic and WWU's Dylan Goodwin who both had a pair of 71s. Thompson slipped to fourth firing a 74 for a 143 total.

Defending champion Claire Rachor of Western Washington is the leader for women's medalist honors.  She opened with a one-over par 73.  WWU's Kara Zitzman and Mandy Wittmier of Saint Martin's were the only other players to break 80.  They are two shots back at 75.

Western Washington is the defending champion in both divisions, winning all five of the previous men's and both of the previous women's tournaments. The Viking men are ranked second in the latest NCAA Division II West Regional poll.
