Men's Soccer: SPU Hands No. 16 Antelopes 1-0 Loss

Sean Russell
Freshman Sean Russell scored the lone goal late in the first half just seven minutes after entering the game for Seattle Pacific which upended 16th-ranked Grand Canyon 1-0 in a NCAA West Region game at the GCU Soccer Field.

Earlier in the day, Cal Baptist got a goal in the 36th minute from Osvaldo Bastida in a 1-0 win over Western Washington at GCU.

Seattle Pacific won for the eighth time in its last nine outings, improving its overall record to 8-2-1. GCU dropped to 7-3-1 and had its unbeaten streak stopped at five games. Earlier this season it also lost to Simon Fraser.

Russell collected a short clearance by the Antelopes defense and took a touch at the top of the box before directing a strike into the lower left corner at 42:24. That was the third collegiate goal for the midfielder and his second game-winner.

Goalkeeper Zach Johnson preserved the narrow margin with three saves en route to his sixth shutout. Adam Garcia had one save for GCU, which was outshot by a slim 9-8 margin.

The Cal Baptist-Western Washington game was also evenly played with both teams putting just two shots "on goal". Lancer goalkeeper Joey Pacheco had two saves to post the shutout.

“We didn't really play that well, but we had some chances and weren't able to make them,” said WWU coach Travis Connell.

Viking midfielder Kellan Brown had a one-on-one chance in the 15th minute, but Pacheco made an outstanding save.

In the 36th minute, Bastida reaching the net from the right side of the box, his fourth goal of the season

Late in the first half, the Vikings' Caden Sowers just missed on a cross from Oscar Jimenez and with five seconds left in the game Keith Ferris headed a corner kick just wide.

Cal Baptist had a 10-8 edge in shots and WWU had a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

MSUB Wins In Overtime, NNU Loses In Extra Period

Freshman defender Isaac Kerr scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift Montana State Billings to a 3-2 victory over Sioux Falls in a neutral site contest at Bismarck, S.D.

The second game of the doubleheader also went into overtime. The University of Mary won that one defeating Northwest Nazarene 4-3.

The Yellowjackets, who got a goal from Haakon Taylor at 71:34 to force the overtime, have won three straight to improve to 5-7 on the season.

MSUB dented the scoreboard first in the 17th minute when Thomas Chameraud sent a perfect through ball to the feet of Justin Enger who cashed in with a shot just outside the six-yard box.

USF didn't counter until the second half, but scored two goals in a five-minute span. The first came in the 59th minute when Brice Holiday scored on header off a free kick from Ryan Keohane.

The second came in the 64th minute when Keohane put a low shot to the left of Eoin Hurley, who ended the match with one save.

Eight minutes later Taylor took advantage of a free ball in front of the net and scored in the wide open net to get the equalizer.

As the game drifted into overtime, MSUB was fouled late in the 91st minute, that's when Chameraud sent a free kick into the box and onto the head of Kerr who flicked the ball on goal and past the keeper for his second game-winner this week.

The Yellowjackets held a 14-7 advantage in total shots and a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Yellowjacket defense also managed to keep USF off the corners, holding a 3-0 edge in corner kicks.

Mary got a goal with eight seconds left in regulation then scored in the 12th minute of overtime as it overcame 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 deficits to defeat Northwest Nazarene.

Stephen Marshall gave the Crusaders a 1-0 lead at 10:39 on a penalty kick. Then Ibk Modupe-Ojo put NNU ahead 2-1 at 39:52.

In the second half after the Marauders had tied it at 2-2, Salvador Sanchez reclaimed the lead for NNU (5-6-1) at 66:45 on an assisted goal.

The lead lasted for all but eight seconds of the period before Andrew Newhouse tied it during a scramble in the box. Mary (1-7-2) scored the game-winner at 1:01.57 as two passes led to a goal by Joe Wood.

"I am shocked with the way the result has gone today," NNU head coach Coe Michaelson said.  "To give up a goal with eight seconds left in a game we controlled the whole way. I can't fault our effort.

"We gave away too many free kicks and they were very difficult to defend with the balls they knocked into the box and all the runners they committed.  We didn't play poorly. We were just a bit unlucky."

Clan Stays Perfect With 5-1 Win At Hawaii Pacific

Chris Bargholz had a pair of goals to lead Simon Fraser to a 5-1 win at Hawaii Pacific Saturday as the Clan stayed unbeaten with their 11th consecutive victory.

The Yellowjackets (8-1-2, 5-0-2) stayed unbeaten in conference games with the win building a 3-0 halftime lead on an own goal and goals by Brookshire and Heidi Greenback.

MSUB added three second half goals by Brookshire, Jennifer Larsen and Jennifer Johnson before NNU got a 87th minute goal by Erika Kristensen to break up the shutout.

MSUB took just eight shots in scoring its five individual goals, just one more than NNU (4-7-2, 2-5-0) launched. Yellowjacket goalie Danielle Gordon had four saves.

Western Oregon (4-5-2, 3-3-1)got an unassisted goal by Lindsay Bauman in the 71st minute to snap a 1-1 tie in a 2-1 road win at Saint Martin's (1-8-2, 1-6-0).
