Volleyball: Tolman MVP In Colorado Mines Classic

Tolman
Setter Brooke Tolman had 59 assists and was selected the tournament MVP as she led Montana State Billings to three-set victories over Northwood (Mich.) and King (Tenn.) Saturday in the Colorado Mines Classic at Golden, Colo.

The Yellowjackets, who tied Metro State for the tournament title with a perfect 4-0 record, needed just 63 minutes to beat Northwood, 25-23, 25-18, 25-23, and 60 minutes to dispose of King, 25-16, 25-21, 25-20.

Seattle Pacific was the only other GNAC team to win twice Saturday as conference squads won just seven of 20 matches.

The Falcons overcame three match points to beat Sonoma State, 25-18, 20-25, 25-21, 14-25, 16-14, after earlier defeating Hawaii Pacific, 21-25, 25-22, 25-23, 26-24, to finish with a 3-1 record in the Waikiki Beach Invitational.

Northwest Nazarene finished the tournament with a 2-2 record, losing twice to 24th ranked UC San Diego, 25-27, 25-11, 25-19, 25-22, and Hawaii Pacific, 25-20, 25-27, 25-20, 25-17.

The only other GNAC winners Saturday were Alaska Anchorage and Western Oregon, which split their matches in the Cal State San Bernardino Invitational, and Central Washington, which went 1-1 in the Humboldt State Invitational.

UAA defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills, 25-18, 25-16, 25-20, before losing to Cal State L.A., 25-23, 23-25, 25-20, 25-14. Western Oregon also lost to CSLA, 25-18, 25-18, 25-21 and beat CSUDH, 25-20, 19-25, 25-17, 26-24.

Western Washington lost both of its matches at San Bernardino, falling to Chico State, 25-16, 25-20, 29-27, and Cal State San Bernardino, 25-13, 25-19, 25-19, as the Coyotes extended their home court win streak to 50 matches.

Central Washington played 10 sets on the day. Cal State East Bay outlasted the Wildcats, 25-18, 18-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-9 in the first match. CWU, however, bounced back to defeat Notre Dame de Namur, 26-25, 24-26, 17-25, 27-25, 15-13.

Saint Martin's lost twice at Arcata, falling to Academy of the Art, 24-26, 25-23, 25-23, 24-26, 15-9, and Cal State East Bay, 25-17, 25-19, 25-23.

Simon Fraser and Alaska Fairbanks each remained winless. The Clan fell to 0-4 with losses to San Francisco State, 25-16, 25-10, 25-12 and host Cal Poly Pomona, 25-19, 25-13, 25-11 in the Cal Poly Pomona Invitational.

Alaska Fairbanks slipped to 0-8 on the season, losing to Minnesota State, 25-14, 25-14, 25-15, and Grand Canyon, 25-13, 25-17, 25-14, to finish winless in four matches in their own UAF Nanook Classic.

Colorado Mines Classic (at Golden, CO)

Tolman averaged 10.2 assists as Montana State Billings, which was winless in 10 non-conference matches last season, won 12 of 15 sets to open its season with four consecutive wins.

Freshman Monica Grimsrud led the Yellowjackets with 52 kills, including 26 in Saturday's two matches. She had 14 kills and four blocks in MSUB's win over King College and 12 kills against Northwood.

Krista Norris had nine kills against Northwood and eight against King to also key the two victories.

Waikiki Beach Invitational (at Honolulu, HI)

Trailing Sonoma State 14-11 in the decisive fifth set, Seattle Pacific scored five consecutive points to pull out the victory and end the tournament with a 3-1 record.

Freshman Madi Cavell factored into two blocks - the first one a Sonoma match point and the second with match point in SPU's favor - in that run.

Cailin Fellows led SPU in the match with 16 kills. Lindsey Wodrich added 15 and Nikki Lowell had 12. Setter Shelby Swanson had 46 assists and four service aces.

Lowell and Wodrich had 13 and 10 kills, respectively, in SPU's win over Hawaii Pacific. The Falcons also got eight blocks from Angie Pricco and five from Lowell. Swanson had 43 assists and Anna Herold had 36 digs.

UC San Diego got 20 kills from Hillary Williamson and outhit Northwest Nazarene .305 to .162 in handing the Crusaders their first loss of the season. Haley Abbott led NNU with 10 kills.

Reisa Fessler and Kaitlyn Tuholski had 12 and 11 kills, respectively, and the Crusaders outblocked Hawaii Pacific 11-6, but had 14 service errors.

CSU San Bernardino Invitational (at San Bernardino)

Robyn Burton of Alaska Anchorage and Emily Jepsen of Western Washington each earned all-tournament honors as their respective teams posted 2-2 records.

Burton had 30 kills on Saturday, including 11 in UAA's win over Dominguez Hills. Burton hit for a .769 percentage (11-1-13) against the Toros as the Seawolves swung at a .374 pace (49-12-99). Jackie Matthisen led UAA with 15 kills.

Burton had 19 kills and a .378 percentage (19-5-37) in their loss to Cal State L.A. Ariel Austin was also in double figures with 10 kills.

Jepsen had 18 kills in WWU's two matches. Marlayna Geary led the Vikings on the day with 24 kills, including 16 against Chico State.

The Vikings, however, were held to .126 and .045 percentages in losing back-to-back matches without winning a set for the first time since the beginning of the 2001 season.

Western Oregon posted a 1-3 record in the tournament. Danielle Reese keyed the victory against Dominguez Hills with 16 kills and five service aces. Krissi Kemper had 11 kills and Becky Blees had five blocks.

Corynn Kopra had a match-high 11 kills and Blees had three blocks in the loss to Cal State L.A.

Humboldt State Invitational (at Arcata)

Jordan Offutt had 20 kills to lead four players in double figures as Central Washington edged Notre Dame de Namur to post a 3-1 record at Arcata.

The Wildcats also got 15 kills from Marcy Hjellum and 11 each from Emmy Dolan and Erin Smith. CWU won despite getting just three kills from Meg Ryan, who had averaged 6.6 kills per set in the three previous matches.

Ryan had 23 kills in CWU's five-set loss to East Bay. Offutt had 18 and Smith added a dozen in that match.

Kristyn Ross led Saint Martin's with 34 kills Saturday as the Saints finished the tournament with a 1-3 record. Ross had 24 kills in SMU's five-set loss to AAU. Katy Ferguson and Kristeen Juarez had 16 and 11, respectively.

Ross had team-highs of 10 kills and 10 digs against Cal State East Bay, which held the Saints to just 27 total kills and a .052 percentage.

Cal Poly Pomona Invitational (at Pomona, CA)

Simon Fraser had just 39 kills on the day in losses to San Francisco State and Cal Poly Pomona and finished the tournament with a minus .017 hitting percentage.

Cheryl Windhorst led the Clan with six kills in its loss to San Francisco State. Three players - Kelsey Robinson, Kristjana Fridfinnson and Kristin Bauder - had four each against Pomona.

UAF Nanook Classic (at Fairbanks)

Reilly Stevens led Alaska Fairbanks with nine kills and Keri Knight had seven in the Nanooks loss to Minnesota State, which was nearly flawless as it hit for a .452 percentage (46-8-84).

Knight had a team-high 10 kills and Casey Tidwell, who was named to the all-tournament team, had seven in UAF's loss to Grand Canyon.

Women's Soccer: Vikings Earn Another Scoreless Draw

Arthurs
Western Washington played its second scoreless overtime draw in less than 48 hours Saturday tying Chico State in a NCAA Division II West Region contest at Orca Field.

Central Washington and Montana State Billings were the only GNAC teams to earn wins during Saturday's full slate of eight games.

CWU played its second consecutive overtime contest edging Sonoma State 2-1 on an unassisted goal by Miranda Heslep in the 100th minute.

The Wildcats (1-0-1) played a scoreless draw at Cal State Stanislaus on Thursday.

Heslep's game-winning goal at Rohnert Park came during a scramble in the goal mouth. Carson McKole scored Central's first goal going one-on-one with the Seawolf goalkeeper after fighting off a defender. Freshman Hadli Farrand was awarded an assist.

CWU was outshot 23-10 and also gave up five more corner kicks (8-3) than Sonoma.

Heidi Greenback scored two goals - her second and third of the season - in MSUB's 3-0 home win against Southwest Minnesota State.

Greenback's goals came at 30:50 and 67:19 after Amanda Brusic had put MSUB on the board at 26:29. Greenback, who was named the MVP in the MSU Billings Cup, earned an assist on that goal.

The Yellowjackets outshot Southwest Minnesota 24-5 and had a 13-0 advantage in corner kicks. MSUB goalkeeper Danielle Gordon had three saves in recording the shutout.

Seattle Pacific, Simon Fraser, Northwest Nazarene, Saint Martin's and Western Oregon were all losers.

Anne Wethe and Sarah McTigue scored just 3 ½ minutes apart early in the second half as No. 2-ranked UC San Diego beat No. 10 SPU 2-0 at Interbay Stadium.

Simon Fraser opened its season with a 1-0 loss to the University of Victoria on a goal in the 89th minute.

Northwest Nazarene (1-1) gave up two goals in the final three minutes in a 3-2 loss at the College of Idaho.

Saint Martin's (0-2) lost 1-0 at Point Loma Nazarene in regulation and Western Oregon (0-2) lost 1-0 in double overtime at San Francisco State.

Western Washington also played a scoreless tie with nationally No.2 UC San Diego Thursday.

“To start off the season by holding these two teams without a goal is really impressive,” said WWU coach Travis Connell.

“We do want to end up with wins, and we need to work on some things offensively and get better there, but I think we can do that.”

Chico State had a 15-10 advantage in shot attempts, but Western goalkeeper Jamie Arthurs made four saves to earn her second shutout. Arthurs had 12 total saves in the two contests.

Each team had good chances to win in overtime.  In the 100th minute, Chico State defender Molly Downtain received a cross that put her alone against Arthurs, but shot wide from 10 yards out.

Then in the 109th minute, a long ball into the penalty area put Western's Taylor Abrass through.  A sliding effort by Abrass poked the ball past Chico State goalkeeper Brianna Furner, but the ball rolled wide of the far post.

The Wildcats had the best opportunity of regulation midway through the first half, as shots by Scotie Walker and Lisa Webster forced Arthurs to make a pair of diving saves just seconds apart.

UC San Diego (1-0-1) and Seattle Pacific (1-1-0) met in last year's NCAA Division II Sweet 16, with the Tritons prevailing 1-0. The Tritons went all the way to the national championship game before settling for second place.

Wethe put UCSD on the board at 53:16 when she headed in a corner kick from Hayley Johnson. Wethe's header from the top of goalkeeper Natalie Harold's 6-yard box bounced hard off the turf and into the net.

McTigue made it 2-0 at 56:47, taking a short pass from Gabi Hernandez and sending a shot bouncing into the back left corner.

Amanda Lawrence scored the game-winning goal at 88:03 in Victoria's win over Simon Fraser. Shannon Elder earned an assist on the goal. SFU keeper Amelia Ng had six saves before giving up the game-winner.

Stephanie Parker had two saves for Victoria, which outshot Simon Fraser 15-9.

Northwest Nazarene got goals from Autumn Yturbe and Erika Kristensen in building a 2-1 lead against College of Idaho.

But, the Coyotes' Brittney Lacey scored from 18 yards away to tie the contest at 87:14 and Taylor Culver then got the game-winner at 89:31. Chelsea Heffner had assists on both goals.

College of Idaho finished with a 24-7 shot advantage. NNU's Tanya Zickefoose had nine saves.

Codi Cameron converted a cross from Kelly Chriserson for the winning goal in Point Loma's victory against Saint Martin's. The Saints were outshot 12-3 and none of SMU's shots required a save. Gina Cardenas had one save for SMU.

Nicole Vanni scored in the 105th minute on a breakaway in San Francisco State's victory over Western Oregon. The game was evenly played as the Gators had only a 12-10 shot advantage. WOU goalie Brittney Rigtrup had five saves and SFSU's Annicia Jones had four.

Men's Soccer: Saint Martin's Edges UC San Diego 1-0

Austin Kelley
Austin Kelley scored the game's lone goal in the 83rd minute as Saint Martin's upset UC San Diego 1-0 in a NCAA Division II West Region soccer game at La Jolla, Calif.

The Saints were one of three GNAC winners Saturday. Northwest Nazarene won its home debut 4-2 beating Academy of Art and Simon Fraser blitzed Thompson Rivers 5-1.

GNAC losers were Western Washington, which lost 2-1 at home to Chico State in its debut and Montana State Billings, which fell 2-0 to Hawaii Pacific in a neutral site contest at Fort Lewis, Colo.

Kelley's goal, which came at 82:24, was just one of nine shots by the Saints who leveled their record at 1-1. The Tritons (1-1), who won seven of their final nine games last season, launched 16 shots.

Both goalies - JJ Olson for the Saints and Josh Cohen for the Tritons - had four saves.

Alex Mangeac scored two of Northwest Nazarene's goals, one on a free kick from 20 yards and another when he dribbled from the left side and shot from the center to snap a 2-2 tie at 76:51, in their win over AAU.

The Crusaders also got goals from Stephen Marshall on a penalty kick and from Benny Mangeac who scored from five yards out after taking a deflection off the post.

Joseph Martin scored two goals and Juan Sanchez had three assists in Simon Fraser's victory over Thompson Rivers.

SFU (2-0) outshot Thompson 17-3 in the contest and also had a 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Forward Kellan Brown scored a late goal, but it wasn't enough in Western Washington's season-opening loss to eighth-ranked Chico State at Orca Field.

“This was a missed opportunity,” Viking coach Travis Connell said. “We were rested, Chico State (which played at SPU Thursday) wasn't, but we played like the tired team.”

The Wildcats opened the scoring in the 20th minute, as Micah Miranda played a pass from the left corner of the penalty area to Ferid Celosmanovic, who then finished with a shot low to the far post.

Chico State doubled the lead in the 74th minute, as Octavio Guzman converted a penalty kick after Cody Levar was fouled.

Brown, who had a header cleared off the line at the end of the first half, pulled a goal back for Western in the 86th minute.

Dean Byron headed a ball into the penalty area, and Brown, with his back to the goal, struck an overhead kick from 15 yards out, tucking the ball into the right side of the net.

The Vikings had one good chance to tie with two minutes left, as Bailey Martin got on the end of a long free kick, but headed over the bar from 10 yards out.

Chico finished the contest with a 21-12 advantage in shots. Viking keeper Leo Cohen was credited with eight saves.

Hawaii Pacific scored goals in the sixth and 72nd minutes and outshot MSUB 18-10 in handing the Yellowjackets their second straight shutout loss.

Chance Bukoski figured in both goals, getting the initial goal at 5:40 off an assist from Truis Lystad before assisting on the clincher by Kimo Komomua at 71:08.
